Since a right and good tattoo machine is very important to a professional tattoo artist, we should know how to choose a best and useful tattoo machine. Now, let’s learn the components of the tattoo machine first.

A tattoo machine is a very unique machine as it is hand held and used to carve very beautiful and permanent images into the skin of one's body. As a tattoo artist it is important to know the anatomy of the machine and have an understanding of how it works. This article throws light on the basic parts and components of a tattoo machine and describes how they work.

Basically, a tattoo machine consists of two springs, two coils, a capacitor, a tube vise, a grip, a tip to hold the needle, a contact screw and a frame base. We will discuss each of them briefly. The modern tattoo machine runs on two alternating electromagnetic coils, which produce an alternating current. There is a capacitor, which is charged by this alternating current produced by the electromagnetic coils.

The charge of the capacitor generates a current into the front spring and the back spring, which are mounted, on the metal frame of the tattoo machine. The strength of the current generated on account of the alternating electromagnetic coil is also managed by the capacitor. The metal frame of the tattoo machine is usually made up of brass, steel, iron or copper which are all conductive metals. The joints generally have plastic bushings.

Most of the integral components of a tattoo machine are made up of conductive metal only and depending upon your budget you can choose between brass, iron and copper. On the rear end, a contact screw with a top binding post is fitted. This is where the tattoo machine is held in the hand. Coming to the front portion of a tattoo machine is where the needle is mounted on a long metallic piece. On the inside, this long cylindrical piece of metal called grip, which is connected to the frame base via a tube vise.

All these components are metallic. The tube vise that joins the frame base and grip is itself connected to the frame base through tube vise thumbscrew. The other screws that are used in a tattoo machine are these: Top binding post set screw and back spring mounting screw. These are used at the rear side of the tattoo machine.

At the front, the last component of a tattoo machine is the tip. The tip is the part of the tattoo machine that holds the needles. There are different types and sizes of needles depending upon the style and type of tattoo to be made. There are different types and sizes of tips, which are invariably capable of holding different types of needles that a tattoo artist uses.

These are the main components of a tattoo machine that a novice or a professional tattoo artist must be aware of. After the introduction of the components, I think you may have a basically understanding for his tattoo machine.
